The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms was enacted to protect you from the power that the State and Police have in your life:
- You have the right to remain silent if you are being investigated for a criminal offence. If police ask, politely give them your name and date of birth, but you donít have to say anything else or explain anything.
- You have the right to know what you are being investigated for or why you are detained. Donít be afraid to ask why they are stopping you from going on your way.
- If you are being arrested or detained, you have the right to call a lawyer of your choice and speak to that person in private. Once you assert that right, police are supposed to stop eliciting information from you until you have had a chance to speak to a lawyer.
